Items:
Mindguide / Bloodguide

By: Jan-Willem van den Broek and Arjan Wardekker
Type: Misc. item (magic)
Game: Dungeons & Dragons (D&D)

This item comes in two versions: the "mindguide" (for psions) and the "bloodguide" (for sorcerers and bards).

Mindguide

This unusual item is highly prized by psions of all kinds. When it is unused it appears to be a gemstone ranging in value from 1 to several thousands of gold pieces. However, when a psion of sufficient psionic might (this is the case if the psion is capable of using the mindguide) comes within 5 feet of the item it will activate.
When this happens the psion gets to make a Will save DC 10 + the level of the power contained in the mindguide (harmless). If this save is failed, then the gemstone converts to pure psionic energy and bonds with the mind of the psion. This bonding takes about 24 hours.
After the bonding has completed, the psion finds that the mindguide helps him direct his psychic energy if so desired. Effectively, this functions as if the character has learned the power that is embedded in the mindguide (this does not count against his normal limits).
Psions cannot use mindguides that contain a power that is higher in level than the highest power they can manifest themselves.
If so desired, the psion can expel the mindguide as a full-round action. The mindguide will then reform as a gemstone just in front of the psion and will not attempt to rebond for the next 10 rounds. Expelling a mindguide requires concentration. If the owner dies, then the mindguide will expell itself in a similar manner.
There are also mindguides that can be used by Psychic Warriors (but not psions). Characters cannot create mindguides for use by the other class unless they can also manifest the power to be embedded as a member of that class.
It is rumored that a clever shaper/sorcerer managed to create a similar item for use by sorcerers. This item is said to consist not of psionic energy that bonds with the mind, but of magical power that bonds with the blood. Such items are often called bloodguides and resemble blood-red gemstones such as rubies in their inactive state.

Caster Level: minimum level to manifest the embedded power as a member of the appropriate class
Prerequisites: Craft Universal Item, the power to be embedded manifested as by a member of the appropriate class (psion if the item is to be used by psions and vice versa for psychic warriors), Craft (gemcutting) 5 ranks
Market Price: The level of the power squared * 1000 gp or a flat 500 gp if it is a level 0 power

Bloodguide

This unusual item is highly prized by sorcerers of all kinds. When it is unused it appears to be a blood-red gemstone ranging in value from 1 to several thousands of gold pieces. However, when a sorcerer of sufficient might (this is the case if the sorcerer is capable of using the bloodguide) comes within 5 feet of the item it will activate.
When this happens the sorcerer gets to make a Will save DC 10 + the level of the spell contained in the bloodguide (harmless). If this save is failed, then the gemstone converts to pure magical energy and bonds with the blood of the sorcerer. This bonding takes about 24 hours.
After the bonding has completed, the sorcerer finds that the bloodguide helps him direct his magical energy if so desired. Effectively, this functions as if the character has learned the spell that is embedded in the bloodguide (this does not count against his normal limits).
Sorcerers cannot use bloodguides that contain a spell that is higher in level than the highest spell they can cast themselves.
If so desired, the sorcerer can expel the bloodguide as a full-round action. The bloodguide will then reform as a gemstone just in front of the sorcerer and will not attempt to rebond for the next 10 rounds. Expelling a bloodguide requires concentration. If the owner dies, then the bloodguide will expell itself in a similar manner.
There are also bloodguides that can be used by bards (but not sorcerers). Characters cannot create bloodguides for use by the other class unless they can also manifest the spell to be embedded as a member of that class.

Caster Level: minimum level to cast the embedded spell as a member of the appropriate class
Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, the spell to be embedded cast as by a member of the appropriate class (sorcerer if the item is to be used by sorcerers and vice versa for bards), Craft (gemcutting) 5 ranks
Market Price: The level of the spell squared * 1000 gp or a flat 500 gp if it is a level 0 spell
